Material-independent crack arrest statistics

چکیده
The propagation of (planar) cracks in a heterogeneous brittle material characterized by a random field of toughness is considered, taking into account explicitly the effect of the crack front roughness on the local stress intensity factor. In the socalled strong-pinning regime, the onset of crack propagation appears to map onto a second-order phase transition characterized by universal critical exponents which are independent of the local characteristics of the medium. Propagation over large distances can be described by using a simple one-dimensional description, with a correlation length and an effective macroscopic toughness distribution that scale in a non-trivial fashion with the crack front length. As an application of the above concepts, the arrest of indentation cracks is addressed, and the analytical expression for the statistical distribution of the crack radius at arrest is derived. The analysis Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 2 February 2008 of indentation crack radii on alumina is shown to obey the predicted algebraic expression for the radius distribution and its dependence on the indentation load.

Material-independent crack arrest statistics: Application to indentation experiments
An extensive experimental study of indentation and crack arrest statistics is presented for four different brittle materials (alumina, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, glass). Evidence is given that the crack length statistics is described by a universal (i.e., material independent) distribution. The latter directly derives from results obtained when modeling crack propagation as a depinning p...
متن کاملCrack propagation, arrest and statistics in heterogeneous materials
We investigate theoretically statistics and thermally activated dynamics of crack nucleation and propagation in a two-dimensional heterogeneous material containing quenched randomly distributed defects. We consider a crack tip dynamics accounting for dissipation, thermal noise and the random forces arising from the elastic interactions of the crack opening with the defects. The equation of moti...
متن کاملDynamic and static characterization of compact crack arrest tests of navy and nuclear steels
Recent experimental and computational work by Link and associates has demonstrated that relatively small (W = 150 mm) single edge notched tension specimens (SE(T)) can be used to obtain crack arrest data high in the ductile-to-brittle transition of ferritic structural steel using dynamic computational techniques if a thermal gradient is utilized to aid in the crack arrest. Testing has been repo...
متن کاملModel for a piezoelectric strip of crack arrest subjected to Mode-I loadings
Purpose: In the present paper a crack arrest model is proposed for an infinitely long narrow poled piezoelectric strip embedded with a centrally situated finite hairline straight crack. Design/methodology/approach: The ceramic of the strip is assumed to be mechanically brittle and electrically ductile. Combined mechanical and electrical loads applied at the edge of the strip open the rims of th...
متن کاملStress Intensity Factor Determination in Functionally Graded Materials, Considering Continuously Varying of Material Properties
In this paper, the plates made of functionally graded material (FGM) with and without a crack are numerically simulated, employing the finite element method (FEM). The material property variations are defined to be fully continuous; therefore, the elements can be as small as required. For this purpose, variations of the material properties are applied in both the integration points and in the n...
